In keeping with the company’s fun spirit, the wardrobe box doubles as a kids’ fort, designed to resemble a rocket. Customers pay a one-time travel fee and receive free protection, assembly, disassembly and wardrobe services. In addition to offering packing and moving services, You Move Me franchisees sell related supplies. “By offering a moving service that’s based solely on the customer experience, our goal is to make a challenging time almost fun.” “Moving is a billion-dollar industry, but it’s packed with less-than-innovative companies,” says Scudamore. So, to set itself apart, You Move Me promises complimentary morning coffees, clear arrival windows and a housewarming plant as a post-move gift, among other customer service initiatives. After researching the industry, I realized there was a lot of opportunity for a company to take the stress out of moving and put the customer first.” They were not on time, didn’t clean up after themselves and even broke things. “Unfortunately, we were let down by our movers. “A couple of years ago, my family and I were moving into our new home,” he explains. As in those instances, the franchisor says he spotted an opportunity to revitalize a mature business sector. Now being made more broadly available to new franchisees, You Move Me is the latest franchise system from Vancouver-based entrepreneur Brian Scudamore, who previously developed both 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and, more recently, WOW 1Day! Painting. Indeed, You Move Me’s operational and call-centre systems were tested since February 2013 by Toronto franchisee Paul Guy, who was also the first and most successful 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchisee. “We leveraged the expertise of the cream of the crop from one brand to start another on the right foot,” explains Tania Venn, public relations (PR) director. This massive simultaneous rollout was possible because the new brand, You Move Me, was introduced by existing 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchisees across North America. In May 2013, a moving company was launched with more than 25 franchises opening at the same time, reaching a market of some 40 million potential customers overnight.
